Taking The Waters
Since pre-Roman times, the Area where Droitwich now stands has been an important source of salt. Droitwich brine is pumped up from an underground lake 200 feet below the town. It is the strongest natural salt water known, containing 30% of natural salts, that is 2.5lbs of salt per gallon of water. Like the Dead Sea, it is ten times more concentrated than normal sea water. There is nothing else like it in Europe.

The specific gravity is 1200 at 15
degrees centigrade (water = 1000). It contains about 30% of natural salts.

A Spa has been defined as an inland town where the natural spring waters are utilised for beneficial purposes. Victorians, over 100 years ago, recognised the therapeutic value of bathing in brine. Thus Droitwich developed into an internationally famous and fashionable Spa town.
For year after year, people would come in their thousands for the enjoyment of bathing, and others for the remedial effects of hydrotherapy, in Droitwich Spa brine.
